GET A CAREER IN CONSERVATION
6th and 7th June 2012
Course fee: £280 including full board accommodation and all meals
If you are an undergraduate, a recent graduate or someone trying to change career, this 2 day course will cover the core elements of what you need to know to get a career in conservation.
Specifically the course will provide you with:
- A deeper understanding of why conservation is needed. This will include the key drivers of conservation: habitat loss, degradation and exploitation, climate change and invasive species.
- A comprehensive knowledge of all parts of the conservation sector. This will include the range of jobs within local and regional NGOs, as well as working within international and statutory organisations. It will cover both academic and practitioner roles, and discuss positions such as ecological fieldworkers, wardens, wildlife and ecological researchers, environmental planners and consultants, wildlife educators, etc.)
- An appreciation of the local, national and international frameworks in which conservationists operate. These include adherence to national legislation and international agreements, as well as responses to biodiversity action plans (BAPs) and the need for site designation and protection.
- A broad overview of some key conservation ‘tools’ e.g. how conservation priorities are set, red listing processes, biodiversity monitoring, spatial analysis through GIS and satellite data, evaluating and developing capacity building.
- A review of how conservation is funded, and a detailed analysis of the different routes into a range of conservation jobs and qualifications.
We use a mixture of formal presentations, discussions and facilitated 'workshop' approaches. We do not shy away from some of the more difficult issues associated with conservation!! You will therefore get a very detailed overview of the entire conservation sector as well as the social, economic and environmental contexts in which it works.
After the course, we will also offer you access to further careers advice and support.
Venue
The course will be held at the conference centre at Folly Farm. This stunning 250-acre nature reserve close to Bristol is owned and managed by the Avon Wildlife Trust. The course price of £280 includes full board accommodation for the two days (bed, breakfast, lunch, tea/coffee and evening meal), printed material, and ongoing careers advice after the course.
